Engage in a critical dialogue with two of the pre-eminent leaders in the field about our roles, responsibilities and opportunities as career service providers. Join Dr Norman Amundson and Dr Kris Magnusson for a unique webinar experience. Over the course of four sessions, participants will be guided to undertake self-reflection and personal inquiry into the conditions and attributes that enable them to or hinder them from making a difference to the people and communities they serve.
Session #1: Making a Difference in Career Services (Norm and Kris) September 8, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm ET
This session is intended to set the stage for the series and focus on topics such as networks, collaborations, connections and creating community. Participants will be introduced to basic processes of inquiry and reflection, and then be directed over the following sessions to each develop a question and/or focus for inquiry to be submitted to Norm and Kris for discussion in the final session.
Session #2: Creative Courage (Norm) September 22, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm ET
This session will give concrete examples of how some career development activities have been infused into career services with professionally trained immigrants and with unemployed clients. The impact of this active engagement process has been assessed and the results are promising. So, the results are in, but counsellors also need creativity and courage to break out of the box and try something with a new more vibrant edge.
Session #3: Career Survival Skills (Kris) October 6, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm ET
A presentation and discussion of the 5 essential survival skills for creating preferred futures. The survival skills include self-assessment, demand assessment, creative bridging of capabilities and demands, demonstrating impact, and marketing/promoting results. Examples of strategies and approaches for both career service providers and their clients will be provided.
Session #4: Responding to Community Inquiry (Norm and Kris) October 20, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm ET
How might we – in this mini-community we have formed through the series – support each other in the development of our aspirations for making a difference? We will take the ideas from the inquiry that participants submit, and use those to provide feedback, comments and/or suggestions for practice. In this way, the “curriculum” of the final session is constructed by the participants in the sessions.
Dr Norman Amundson is a Professor in Counselling Psychology at the University of British Columbia, Canada. He has given numerous workshops and has been a keynote speaker at many national and international conferences. In his writings, he emphasizes the importance of creativity, imagination, cultural awareness, positive affirmation, hope and active engagement. His publications include over 100 journal articles; training DVDs; and books and workbooks. He has an active research program and is currently exploring the impact of face-to-face and online career interventions. He has received a number of awards from professional associations, including the 2014 NCDA Eminent Career Award and an honorary doctorate from the University of Umea, in Sweden.
Dr Kris Magnusson (Dean of Education at Simon Fraser University) has been a counsellor educator since 1989, and a recipient of the Stu Conger award for leadership in career development. He played a pivotal role in creating, in Concordia College, Canada’s first English post-degree program focusing exclusively on career development. He is the author of seven books ranging from Theories of Career Development (co‐authored with Dr Dave Redekopp) to a self-help career book, Radical Change in the World of Work: The Workbook, a title with a circulation of 100,000 copies. He is a prolific researcher and was a member of the Canadian Research Working Group for Evidence‐Based Practice in Career Development (CRWG). His recent work focuses on informing practice through applications of impact measures, and on the development of coherent career practice.

NO REFUNDS are granted after this point. An administrative fee of 10% will be deducted from any paid webinar registration.
Refunds will be issued within two weeks after receipt of the written notice.
Delegate substitutions are permissible. Please notify us at registration@ceric.ca if you intend to transfer your registration to another person. Supply us with that person’s name and contact information including their email address. The substitute delegate will be required to pay any difference in registration rate.
If a technical failure at the attendee’s home or workplace prevents access to the live webinar, the attendee will not be given a refund. It is the responsibility of the attendee to confirm system requirements and test their computers prior to the start of the webinar.
